Orbis Obscurus
The Orbis Obscurus project is an ongoing series of video-based objects. Imagery appears on a screen or a surface in an abstract and mysterious form, its motion orbital or globular. Mirrors on the image surface allow for another view of the abstracted imagery, resolving it into a realized, more legible form.
The privileged points of view that undo a visually vexing swirl of imagery create a conceptual space that is difficult to describe directly. Each piece is a passage. A passage in geography or in a some ongoing natural process or in a narrative, fictional or historical or both.
The act of physically maneuvering and negotiating a visual relationship to legible meaning is akin to an act of interpretation. It is a commitment to a certain metaphorical reading. In these works, the metaphor becomes elastic and forgiving.
